About this Event

2019 IOLN CAMPAIGN DESIGN WORKSHOP

A CALL TO ACTION FOR MEMBERS

Members and interested parties are invited to join a ‘day of inspiration’. A brainstorming and co-creation workshop. The morning session will be dedicated to sharing ideas, defining campaign strategy and drafting storyboards for campaign content.

The afternoon session will bring together graphic designers, professional science communicators and educators to work together to co-design and create campaign assets for different channels and mediums. Further design and development will follow post-event in the run-up to launching the campaign.

Members who are unable to attend can still participate in the implementation of the campaign.

BACKGROUND:

The Irish Ocean Literacy Network was established in 2016. Galway Atlantaquaria is the current IOLN Secretariat. The IOLN strives for an ocean literate society across the island of Ireland.

The network brings together relevant institutes, agencies, researchers, small and medium-sized enterprises, non-governmental organisations, individuals and educators to work towards achieving this goal. Working towards an Ocean Literate Society and enhancing collaboration and interactions between our members, we are looking to launch a Network Campaign in Spring/Summer 2019 as a way to work together on collective concerted action at an “all island” level. The campaign will most likely take the form of an online social media campaign linked to a relevant physical event. We propose that interested network members volunteer to co-create and carry out the campaign. There is currently no funding available for the campaign so it is hoped that members can provide in-kind support and align activities to their ongoing activities.

OVERARCHING THEME: ‘Love the Ocean’ ‘Love OUR Ocean’

2019 THEME: ‘We are Islanders’ ‘My island, My Ocean’

It is proposed that the 2019 Network Theme should be ‘We are Islanders’ as voted for by IOLN members at the February 2019 network workshop. It is proposed that the 2019 theme is framed within the overarching theme ‘Love the Ocean’.

“We are Islanders” is about asking the public to communicate their personal connections with the Ocean. How does the Ocean make you feel? How do we as individuals personally relate to the Oceans? What does it mean to us?

We want all islander’s on the island of Ireland to share how they feel, tell us their story, explain their connection with the Ocean, tell us about their concerns etc.

CAMPAIGN TIMING

It is hoped to launch the campaign in June 2019 linked to World Ocean Day or SEAFEST. The duration of the campaign will be decided during the workshop.

8th June: World Ocean Day

9-10th June 2019: SeaFest 2019 (Cork)

EXPECTED PARTICIPANTS

The workshop is free for members of the IOLN, and we especially welcome science communications and those with expertise and interest in story-telling, animation, graphic design, visual scribing/graphic facilitation, videography, digital marketing and social media campaigns.
