Prof. Blánaid White

Biography

Prof. Blánaid White graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemistry with German from Dublin City University (DCU) in 2001 and a Ph.D. (Analytical Chemistry) from DCU in 2005. She joined the School of Chemical Sciences as a lecturer in 2008, having completed postdoctoral research with Prof. Craig Lunte in the University of Kansas. In 2012 she became chairperson of the BSc. in Environmental Science and Health in DCU and in 2017 was promoted to Associate Professor. Blánaid’s research group is currently funded by Alltech Ireland Ltd., the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the Environmental Protection Agency, Interreg (Atlantic Area) and the Irish Research Council.

Expertise

Blánaid’s research expertise includes both on the development of intelligent analysis tools and the application of analytical chemistry for the investigation of chemical and biochemical processes in the world around us.

A primary focus of her research is the development and application of innovative technologies for investigative and regulatory monitoring of known and emerging contaminants in food, soil and water, and the pursuit of research to inform and support national and international policy and decision making. Contaminants of interest include pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and heavy metals, analysed using screening methods, targeted analysis and effects based monitoring.
