November 13, 2024 – The Deisiú Fashion Showcase presented an extraordinary textile collection by designer Pamela Heaney, drawing inspiration from research at DCU’s Water Institute. This event celebrated the confluence of fashion, sustainability, and cultural heritage through Heaney’s innovative and historically grounded designs.
Inspired by the intricate micro-topographical patterns of the Brill fish (Scophthalmus rhombus), Heaney’s work merges bioinspired design with early 20th-century Irish mending traditions. Each garment symbolizes growth, protection, and repair, reflecting the resilience of Ireland’s island communities and their culture of restoration. The spiraling scale motifs of the Brill informed textiles that are both visually striking and functional, highlighting sustainable approaches to modern design.
“The Brill’s organic textures translate into garments that celebrate the art of restoration, bridging past craft traditions with a sustainable vision for fashion’s future,” said Pamela Heaney, Designer in Residence at DCU Water Institute.
In addition to bioinspired textiles, the collection incorporates archival research and hands-on craftsmanship, underscoring the enduring relevance of traditional techniques. The event also featured artwork by Erin Quinn, adding depth to the narrative by connecting historical practices with contemporary sustainable design principles.
Deisiú exemplifies how fashion can honor heritage while addressing urgent environmental challenges, paving the way for a more conscious approach to design.
