Congratulations to our DCU Water Institute PI Dr. Lorna Fitzsimons on the recent coverage of her work in Resource consumption and process performance of wastewater treatment plants.
Along with researchers E. Doherty, G. McNamara and E. Clifford, Dr. Fitzsimons has been carrying out research on the best methods of measuring, auditing and benchmarking for process optimisation in Irish wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The research funded by the EPA in Ireland, comprised of the auditing and study of 10 representative Irish WWTPs.
Wastewater treatment is a resource-intensive process that utilises several inputs, such as energy, chemicals and water, to produce an effluent that meets designated environmental standards. Driven by environmental regulations, the focus of wastewater treatment plants has traditionally been the quality of the effluent and not necessarily the energy or resource efficiency of the plant.
