PhD Opportunities

The Water Institute is looking for enthusiastic PhD candidates to take part in some projects that we are currently undergoing! These projects are a PhD in Marine Biofouling, and in Water Analysis by Next-Generation Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip Technologies. We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate with a BEng or BSc. in Engineering, Analytical Science, Physics or equivalent and a keen interest in environmental monitoring and marine science to work as part of a multidisciplinary team on this ambitious project.

Marine Bio-fouling:
Studies will include development of textured surfaces on materials deployed in the ocean energy or monitoring technologies. The study of biofilm community structure, attachment strength and hydrodynamic effects will inform the development of new materials for marine applications
Water Analysis by Next-Generation Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip Technologies:
The project will develop a several test formats for identifying potentially hazardous molecules and pathogens that can be carried out “at-tap” or on-site in a highly automated and thus very user-friendly manner on a miniaturized and cost-efficient microfluidic “Lab-on-a-Chip” system.
If you have any informal queries, send an email to Prof. Fiona Regan (fiona.regan@dcu.ie), DCU Water institute.
The closing date to applying for both projects is June 30th 2019, or until the positions are filled.
