Professor Pat Brereton speaks at the Royal Irish Academy Conference on The Global Politics of Climate Emergency

On April 29th 2020  a conference was held entitled: The global politics of climate emergency at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin

Prof. Pat Brereton, School of Communication, DCU gave a presentation entitled, From Democratic Deficit to Techno-Fix and War Scenarios: An eco-reading of 2019 documentary/fictional narratives. In his talk Prof. Brereton concludes that political communication and active citizenship needs to work together to communicate with audiences of all persuasions into the future. In developing new and better ways to engage the public with climate change having faced a global pandemic, mass media in all its manifestations becomes absolutely essential in driving such constructive dialogue, while promoting better understanding and greater levels of environmental literacy amongst all our global citizens.

 

The programme comprised 4 panels Discourses and Climate Change, Democracy, Rights and Climate Change, Just Transitions and Pathways

The plenary session chaired by Kevin O’Sullivan, The Irish Times was given by Mrs Mary Robinson, MRIA who spoke on ‘The climate crisis requires a response based on justice’
