A failure at the waste water treatment facility at Ringsend, Dublin occurred over the weekend. Sewage sludge discharged into Dublin Bay at about 9am on Saturday 23rd February 2019. Aerial photographs showed the extent of the leak. Works are underway to complete a repair to this leak. This isn’t a once off though, during erratic weather periods such as storm Brian, overflow of raw sewerage leak into the Irish Sea where swimmers and recreational users of the beach have no idea this has occurred. The Water Institute has developed a handheld bathing water E.coli measurement device called #Colisense and we are planning some monitoring to determine the extent of contamination. We are also making a call on @IrishWater for frequent E. Coli monitoring of Dublin Bay and any other at risk areas throughout Ireland.
